Ever since Errol Spence Jr.'s impressive knockout victory over former junior welterweight champion Chris Algieri in April, there has been much speculation about the possibility of a bout between he and reigning IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook of London. It was believed that the victory over Algieri cemented his place as mandatory challenger for Brook's title, but that was not the case. That has not stopped the boxing public at large from fanning flames about this potential blockbuster matchup.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn added fuel to the fire while recently being interviewed by Tha Boxing Voice's Nestor Gibbs. During the brief interview Hearn mentioned he has been in contact with Al Haymon and representatives for Errol Spence Jr. While in contact with representatives for the talented prospect that many feel is the heir-apparent to Floyd Mayweather Jr. at 147 pounds, Hearn asked if they wanted to make the fight now? The response from Errol Spence's representatives as stated by Hearn himself; "No, that is one for down the line".
Errol Spence Jr. appeared to be somewhat baffled by the comments of the promoter as he was questioned about the fight with Brook over Twitter. Spence responded to the premise of him and his team turning down the offer by going on a expletive-laced rant basically saying he did not turn down any offer for a fight with the IBF champion, Kell Brook.
This is certainly a fight that boxing fans are clamoring for and it will undoubtedly happen. However, Spence must first earn the IBF's mandatory position by facing Konstantin Ponomarev in a title eliminator. The two camps were unable to come to an agreement on terms for the fight recently possibly because of the current friction between Top Rank, promoter of Ponomarev and Al Haymon, who represents Errol Spence Jr. The fight will now head to a purse bid scheduled to be held on May 17th.
